Position Overview

The Maryland Engineering Senior Data Analyst is a key member of the undergraduate programs team, responsible for extracting, analyzing, and interpreting existing student institutional data to support evidence-based decision-making and continuous improvement efforts within Maryland Engineering. The senior data analyst will play a crucial role in providing insights that drive strategic initiatives and serving as a consultant for various data-related projects requested by the dean and associate deans of the College. They will serve as Maryland Engineering’s liaison to UMDs central Institutional Research, Planning, and Assessment Office (IRPA). Approximately one third of the position’s role will be dedicated to supporting the Clark Scholars Program Network (CSPN), which is a collective of 11 distinct cohort-based scholarship programs at select universities across the country. The remaining two thirds of their effort will support data analytics needs within Maryland Engineering.

We are seeking candidates who excel at using data to convey a compelling narrative and who have experience in both quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. In addition to extracting findings from existing institutional data, we are seeking an analyst who possesses qualitative research methods including but not limited to: conducting in-depth interviews, focus groups and content analysis.

Position Context

The Senior Data Analyst sits within the Maryland Engineering Undergraduate Programs unit which includes the following areas:

The Senior Data Analyst reports to the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs (Dr. Ken Kiger) with a dotted line to the Clark Scholars Program Network director (Joakina Stone).

Key Roles and Responsibility:

Data Analysis: 55%

  • Collaborate with various departments and CSPN to identify data needs and requirements for program evaluation, assessment, and student outcomes.
  • Collect, clean, and organize large datasets from multiple sources, ensuring data accuracy and integrity.
  • Utilize statistical techniques and data analysis tools to extract meaningful insights and patterns from raw data.
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis to identify trends, outliers, and correlations that inform decision-making processes.
  • Develop peer data comparative analysis and benchmarking
  • Develop and maintain data models, dashboards, and visualizations to effectively communicate findings to stakeholders.
  • Build a framework and workflow process for how to manage data requests and annual reporting obligations.

Data Reporting (e.g. ABET, ASEE, CSPN): 20%

  • Lead the preparation and submission of required data reports (ABET, ASEE, CSPN, and other relevant organizations) as requested by the Dean’s Office.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather and consolidate data for accurate reporting, including programmatic assessment data.

Data Consultancy: 15%

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on data analysis methodologies, tools, and best practices.
  • Provide guidance and support to faculty, staff, and administrators in using data to inform decision-making, solve problems, and improve processes.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define data-related projects, scope, objectives, and deliverables.
  • Offer training and workshops to enhance data literacy across the institution and empower data-driven decision-making.
  • Develop knowledge and expertise around the campus’s existing data resources and tools.

Strategic Planning & Data Informed Decision Making: 10%

  • Collaborate with leadership to align data analysis efforts with the institution's strategic goals and initiatives.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to provide insights that contribute to data-informed strategic planning and resource allocation.
  • Provide the Dean, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs, and CSPN with guidance and policy recommendations informed by data analysis in the areas of recruitment, retention, limited enrollment program policies, and other undergraduate program needs.
  • Contribute to the development of institutional dashboards and key performance indicators to track progress towards goals.
  • Prepare ad-hoc reports and presentations for senior leadership, highlighting actionable insights from data analysis.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5+ years of professional work experience
  • Experience with data management and visualization software such as Tableau, PowerBI, or other similar program
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in relevant field (e.g., Statistics, Data Science, Information Systems, Educational Research, or related degree programs with applicable transferable skills)
  • 3+ years of experience using large datasets within educational environments
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools such as Python, R, SQL, Dedoose
  • Strong understanding of statistical concepts, methodologies, and modeling, including both quantitative and qualitative methods
  • Experience with data manipulation, cleaning, and transformation
  • Familiarity with higher education data reporting standards and ethical considerations

Salary & Benefits:

  • 88K - 100K depending on qualifications and experience
