Main Purpose of Job
The Geologist Lead/Advanced is responsibleforproviding project management and oversight for the assessment and cleanupactivities conducted by external parties at Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP),National Priorities List (NPL) and Controlled Hazardous Substances (CHS) siteswith knowledge of both the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensationand Liability Act (CERLA) and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act(RCRA). Oversight activities include reviewing and evaluating conditions ofknown or suspected contamination, determining the extent of remediation needed,and overseeing the conduct of remediation activities at these sites. Theposition is responsible for the review of complex environmental investigationsof groundwater, surface water/ sediments and soils which requires the review ofgeological, geophysical, chemical or hydrogeological data and the preparationof technically accurate reports and correspondence. The employee will reviewwork prepared by highly trained and experienced environmental professionals andwill function as a project manager to determine the potential public health andsafety impacts of hazardous materials having a potential impact on human healthand the environment. This position also requires direct coordination with theRCRA and Superfund Divisions of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),MDE administrations, other State and federal agencies and the public.
Working conditions are as follows:
- Exposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant work environments. Site visits and actual collection of environmental samples entail a variety of exposure to field conditions that can be uncomfortable and unpleasant. The majority of these conditions include inclement weather with potential exposure to extreme heat or cold, briars, plant toxins, plant pollens, mold, fungus and bird feces in old abandoned buildings, insect bits, ticks, wild animals and other site specific conditions.
- Exposure to hazardous conditions which may result in injury. This includes environmental sampling which includes potential exposure to hazardous substances as well as physical conditions such as airborne particulates, steep slopes, uneven terrain, stream mud, ice and snow.
- Special physical demands such as lifting 50 pounds or more, climbing ladders, etc. This requires extensive hand auguring and bending as well as loading and unloading coolers. Some sampling equipment, such as carboys filled with deionized water, may also exceed 50 pounds in weight.
- Wearing protective equipment such as goggles, masks, and gloves to ensure that the staff does not come into contact with harsh chemicals and toxic byproducts of industrial activity. Basic protective equipment will be provided.
The incumbent in this position may be required to drive a Statevehicle. If you maintain an out-of-state driving license, you mustprovide a certified copy of your driving record from the appropriate MotorVehicle Administration at the time of appointment. Individuals mustmaintain a driver's license with no more than 5 points on their driving recordin order to drive a State vehicle.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science.
Experience: Five years of experience performing professional geological work.

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth sciencefor the required education and one year of the required experience.
2.Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military serviceexperience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as acommissioned officer in physical science classification or physicalscience specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
It is preferred that the selected candidate has the following:
- Knowledge of Voluntary Cleanup Program processes and requirements in Statute
- Have excellent organizational and writing skills.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
2. Depending on the assigned essential functions of the work, employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain certification as specified in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards-29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Employees in this classification may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protection equipment such as respiratory protection equipment.
2. Employees in this classification may be subject to ongoing medical testing in accordance with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards - 29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response.
3. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in on a twenty-four hour basis and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
