Introduction

This recruitment is limited to current Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) employees only.This is a position specific recruitment for the Department of Natural Resources, Fishing and Boating Services.

This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

LOCATION OF POSITION

303 Marine Academy Drive, Stevensville, Maryland 21601 (Queen Anne’s County)

Main Purpose of Job

This position is a sub-professional technical work at the experienced level in the field of surveying. It works with the survey team using surveying equipment and is responsible for the accurate placement of regulatory and navigation buoys on a 36’ Buoy Tender/Debris vessel. This position supervises the structural/cosmetic repairs/upgrades and is responsible for commanding small vessels involved in buoy operations. The program is vital to a variety of state regulatory, research and restoration programs within Maryland’s portion of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate including at least four courses in mathematics and/or science.

Experience: Two years of experience performing advanced level HydrographicEngineering Associate work or three years of experience performingfull performance level/advance level Hydrographic Engineering Associate work in the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

OR

Experience:Nine years of experience involving any combination of hydrography,engineering, surveying, or construction inspection work includingthree years of experience in hydrographic engineering associated activities.

Notes:

1.Candidates may substitute credit hours in the field of engineering, geology, physics, oceanography, or mathematics (excluding basic required courses) from an accredited college or university at the rate of 15 credit hours for one year, for up to two years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Civil Engineeringclassifications or CivilEngineeringor Quarrying Specialist specialty codes in thehydrographic engineeringfield of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • GPS and GIS training and experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Experience or desire to learn operation and maintenance of boats, motors, and trailers.
  • Experience with or ability to quickly learn technical skills and computer programs such as ArcGIS, Arc Map, Visual CAD, Excel.
  • Google Sheets and Google Documents.
  • A USCG Captain’s license and/or a Commercial Driver’s License or desire to obtain one is preferred but not required.
