I am really starting to love turnips as a low carb substitute for potatoes. They were so good in this keto scalloped potatoes recipe that I think I will be making them like this from now on. I don’t think anyone will know.

On there own turnips can have an earthy, slightly bitter taste but when they are baked in this rich, creamy and cheesy sauce they taste just like a potato to me. It’s soft and tender and has the same texture as a potato!

This dish is pretty decadent so you should get about 8 side dish servings out of it and each serving has just 4.9g net carbs. If I used potatoes the carb count would be 16.2g! It’s pure low carb comfort food and you won’t even know it’s turnips!

Why I love turnips as a pasta and potato substitute.

Turnips are a root vegetable that are low in calories, fat and carbs but high in fiber, vitamins and minerals.Check out thisarticle about the health benefits of turnipsto learn more.

I have substituted potatoes with turnips in this traditional potato dish but also in this bacon andturnip hash brown recipe.

And not only are they great as a substitute for potatoes but also as a good keto substitute for pasta. Lately I have also used the m in a pesto pasta dish and this garlic and lemon pasta dish. Both are low carb dishes and tasty fabulous.

So give them a try. This recipe is the perfect recipe to start with. The nutritional information for 1 turnip is 34 cals / 0.4g fat / 7g carbs / 2g fiber / 1g protein = 5g net carbs.

Recipe ingredients I used.

Below you can see that you only need 4 simple ingredients to make this delicious dish and they are turnips, heavy cream, green onions and gruyere or Swiss cheese.

I bought all of these ingredients at Aldi. You can use either swiss or gruyere cheese or a blend of them both. They would both work find. I love the flavor of these cheeses in for the sauce but you could possible use sharp cheddar cheese or even gouda. But try the swiss/gruyere first.

When picking a turnip go for a smaller, fresher turnip. Larger ones will be a bit more bitter and fibrous. The ones I used below are about 2 -2 ½ inches in diameter.

I made these today for a birthday dinner. Everybody loved them. I made the cream into a sauce by adding some parmesan cheese, onion powder and 1/2 cup of cream cheese and boiled it. I then added it to the sliced turnips and poured everything into the casserole dish. I then topped it with Mexican blend shredded cheese and baked it until the turnips were soft. This is a wonderful substitute for scalloped potatoes.

I found your recipe through Healthy Aperture. Instead of calling this a potato dish when there are no potatoes in it, call it what it really is and say they’re scalloped turnips. Anything else is just false advertising.

I do say it’s turnips in the title though I get what you are saying and I’m sorry if it misled you.
