Live blog: Hawaii football vs. Albany (2024)

Through two games, the University of Hawaii football team has surpassed expectations in keeping games close against Vanderbilt and Stanford, but the Rainbow Warriors remain winless.

Saturday presents an opportunity for the ‘Bows to get their first victory of the season as they host Albany of the FCS at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.

Hawaii 31, Albany 20, Final

9:21: Hawaii gets the first down it needs and will run the clock out. UH gets its first win of the 2023 season and escapes with a 31-20 victory over Albany. Lots to clean up on Hawaii’s end, but the ‘Bows improve to 1-2 for now.

9:19: Albany turns it over on downs on its own 42 after an Ezra Evaimalo sack. UH takes over with a 31-20 lead with 2:15 left. Albany has two timeouts.

9:10: Albany takes over from its own 25 after a touchback on the ensuing kickoff.

9:09: TOUCHDOWN ‘BOWS. Brayden Schager connects with Steven McBride on a 12-yard touchdown with 3:20 remaining. UH leads 31-20 with 3:20 left.

9:04: After a pass that was ruled backwards and not reviewed, UH linebacker Noah Kema returns the fumble to the Albany 30.

9:00: Linebacker Logan Taylor is down for UH. A gigantic loss for the defense, as Taylor is viewed as the alpha for the team’s defense. Albany is currently driving down 24-20 with 6:19 left. Great Danes have the Ball at the UH 17 and are facing second-and-1.

8:53: STUFFED AGAIN. Hawaii goes for it on its own 39 on fourth-and-1 and is again stopped. Albany takes over with 7:36 left.

8:49: Albany goes for it on fourth-and-3 at the UH 17 and gets STOPPED. Hawaii takes over with 10:02 left.

8:46: Hawaii calls timeout before going for it on fourth-and-1 from its own 40. Dalen Morris gets the shotgun snap and it SHORT. Albany takes over at the UH 40 down 24-20 with 12:44 to go.

8:41: Hawaii will get the ball back on its own 33 after forcing a punt. A large return is negated by a holding call.

FOURTH QUARTER

8:34: Hawaii can’t gain traction on its next drive and punts. Albany with an opportunity to take the lead back with 1:03 left from its own 12.

8:30: Hawaii will begin from its own 28 with 3:23 left in the third after Hines’ latest return.

8:29: Hawaii’s lead has been trimmed to 24-20 after a 32-yard John Opalko field goal with 3:32 left in the third.

8:26: Schager is INTERCEPTED at the UH 21 and Albany has great field position to begin its next drive.

8:23: Hawaii forces a three-and-out and punt and will take over from its own 9 with 4:37 left in the third.

8:20: Albany takes over from its own 25 after a fair catch.

8:17: TOUCHDOWN RAINBOW WARRIORS. UH rolls the dice again on fourth-and-6 and scores on a 34-yard touchdown from Schager to Jalen Walthall, who makes a spectacular one-handed grab and fights through pass interference to give Hawaii a 24-17 lead with 6:10 left in the third quarter.

8:09: Hawaii’s defense holds strong after an early first down and forces a punt. Hawaii shakes off a risky return and will take over from its own 17 with 8:53 left in the third quarter.

8:03: Hawaii rolls the dice immediately on fourth-and-1 from its own 34 and converts with Navy graduate Dalen Morris. But from there, UH can’t get another first down and punts. Albany takes over from its own 22 with 11:36 left in the third.

7:57: Hawaii will begin the second half from its own 25 after a touchback on the kickoff.

THIRD QUARTER

7:37: Albany gets a first down at the Hawaii 29 and is granted its final timeout of the half with two seconds left after a Peter Manuma unsportsmanlike conduct penalty keep the UAlbany drive alive. The Great Danes line up for a 46-yard field goal and it’s GOOD. Hawaii and Albany are tied at 17 at halftime. Not a good first half for UH.

7:25: Albany takes over from its own 18 after its latest kickoff return.

7:23: TOUCHDOWN UH. Steven McBride hauls in a 30-yard pass from Brayden Schager with 3:34 left in the second quarter. Hawaii takes a 17-14 lead after Matthew Shipley’s extra point.

7:17: Hawaii forces the three-and-out and punt it needed and will take over from its own 38 with 6:17 left in the first half.

7:15: Hawaii is looking sloppy and needs to clean things up in a hurry. The ‘Bows call their final timeout, only to punt on fourth-and-20. An unsportsmanlike conduct call gives Albany the ball on its own 40 with 7:11 left in the first half.

7:04: Hawaii takes over from its own 29 after a Chuuky Hines kickoff return.

7:01: TOUCHDOWN GREAT DANES. Albany defensive back Larry Walker Jr. takes an interception 35 yards to the house with 11:20 left in the second quarter. Hawaii trails 14-10.

6:59: Hawaii forces a punt and will take over from its own 12 with 11:57 left in the second quarter and a 10-7 lead.

SECOND QUARTER

6:47: TOUCHDOWN HAWAII. UH takes the lead back on a four-yard pass from Brayden Schager to Jonah Panoke with nine seconds left in the first quarter.

6:43: Poffenbarger is INTERCEPTED by freshman defensive back Elijah Palmer, who has been having a stellar freshman season for UH. Hawaii takes over on its own 26 with 3:57 left in the first quarter.

6:37: Hawaii gets to the Albany red zone but Brayden Schager is INTERCEPTED by Dylan Kelly. Albany takes over on its own 17 with 6:48 left in the first quarter.

6:30: TOUCHDOWN ALBANY. Reese Poffenbarger takes a keeper 41 yards TO THE HOUSE. The Great Danes lead 7-3 with 8:52 left in the first quarter.

6:25: Hawaii goes three and out and punts from the shadow of its own goal line. Albany takes over from midfield.

6:22: Hawaii forces another three-and-out and punt. Steven McBride calls for a fair catch on his own 7 with 10:25 left in the first.

6:14: Hawaii goes three-and-out and takes a 3-0 lead on Matthew Shipley’s 25-yard field goal.

6:10: Hawaii forces a three-and-out and punt. Albany’s punt is BLOCKED and Hawaii takes over from the Albany 15 with 14:16 left in the first quarter.

6:07 p.m.: Hawaii wins the toss and defers. Albany will receive to begin the game.

FIRST QUARTER

Pregame: The ‘Bows are donning an all-black look from head to toe. Cornerback/returner Cam Stone is out as he recovers from a knee injury.
