Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources (Department), Freshwater Fisheries and HatcheriesDivision is currently accepting applications for a Natural Resource Biologist IV position. This position acts as the Albert Powell State Trout Hatchery Facility Manager and directs all aspects of fish culture activities at the Albert Powell State Trout Hatchery and the Cushwa Rearing Facility. Together, these facilities make up the largest coldwater production complex in the state supplying both adult and juvenile trout to support the Put and Take program, Youth Rodeo Program, Trout in the Classroom, and regional management needs. In addition to the Albert Powell Hatchery production, duties include supervision of staff, development of project budgets, management of capital projects and critical maintenance, oversight of state housing, management of physical plant, supporting an operational connection with other Maryland coldwater and warmwater production facilities as well as regional Freshwater staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:Four years of professional experience conducting research and analysis in thefields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science,natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physicaloceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoologyand five years of experience in performing professional biological workin the field of natural resources management.

Notes:

1. Candidatesmay substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmentalaquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marinebiology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheriesmanagement, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources managementrelated field of study from an accredited college or university and five yearsof experience in performing professional biological work in the field ofnatural resources management for the required experience.

2.Candidates may substitute graduate education beyond a Bachelor's degree from anaccredited college or university in a natural resources related field of studyas described above at the rate of 15 graduate credit hoursfor one yearofexperience for up to two years of the required experience.

3.Candidatesmay substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissionedofficer in the natural resources management and biological sciencesclassifications or natural resources management and biological sciencesspecialty codes inthe wildlife biology field of work on a year-for-yearbasis for the required experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Four years experience working in a aquaculture facility or hatchery.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The preferred applicant will demonstrate experience working in coldwater aquaculture facilities or hatcheries culturing trout. This entails knowledge of fish culture techniques, sampling and grading fish, developing feed rates, fish health/biosecurity, water quality monitoring, and transportation of live fish.

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
