Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency (“Agency”) is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement andPension System (“System”). The System is a defined benefit pension plancovering governmental employees within the State of Maryland. The System has over400,000 participants (customers), including 192,000 members who are activelyemployed and enrolled, 175,000 payees who receive a monthly retirement benefitpayment, and 40,000 vested members who are no longer actively employed but whohave earned a benefit that will become payable at a future date.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of the Administrative Specialist III is to be the provide administrative duties in support of the Member Services Unit. This position serves as the first person-to-person contact for customers arriving at the Maryland State Retirement Agency.In this role the Administrative Specialist III must present a friendly and professional presence and assists customers in getting the resources they need. This individual must be able to quickly and correctly determine the best manner to completely and accurately service the needs of the customers coming into the Agency and assist the customer in navigating their visit to the Agency. Customer service interactions will occur primarily face-to-face but also will occur over the phone and via email. The customers are members, retirees, beneficiaries, and employers seeking assistance with retirement related issues.The Administrative Specialist III is expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills as well as customer service skills, and have working knowledge of the laws, regulations, policies, and procedures of the System.

POSITION DUTIES

1)Acts as the first face-to-face contact forvisitors to the Agency.

2)Assists the Retirement Benefits Specialist withadministrative tasks related to providing service to our customers.

3)Completes special assignments assigned byDirector, Deputy Director, or Retirement Benefits Specialist Supervisor.

4)Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Two years of experience performing administrative staff, clerical, clerical technical, or secretarial work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer involving staff work requiring regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting rules and regulations in accordance with agency laws and policies on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. At least one year of experience in a customer service role.

2. At least two years of experience with the Microsoft Office suite of applications: Excel, Outlook, and Word.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
