This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Resource Assessment. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job
This position is a Natural Resources Biologist in the Monitoring and Non-tidal AssessmentDivisions (MANTA) and head of the Restoration Monitoring and Interpretation group, includingextensive participation in state-of-the-art ecological assessment research and monitoringprograms that are focused on the effects of land use, habitat degradation, impervious surfaces,and nonpoint source pollution on aquatic living resources in Maryland. The main purpose of theposition is to manage and participate in water quality and biological monitoring of selectChesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund projects to help evaluate their effectiveness.The position is involved in substantial coordination and information sharing to help informdecisions about the most appropriate stream rehabilitation and nutrient and sediment reductionstrategies. Important duties include assistance in collecting storm flow data and also serve as amember of a field crew responsible for the collection of data on fishes, benthicmacroinvertebrates, herpetofauna, crayfishes, freshwater mussels, physical habitat, water quality,and land use in non-tidal streams and rivers as part of the Maryland Biological Stream Survey.Duties also include study design, data analysis and interpretation, field data collections, andreporting related to the status and distribution of Maryland’s aquatic resources. The position isalso responsible for leading efforts to develop, manage, analyze, and interpret complex spatialdatasets.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:Four years of professional experience conducting research and analysis in thefields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science,natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physicaloceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoologyand four years of experience in performing professional biological workin the field of natural resources management.

1. Candidatesmay substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmentalaquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marinebiology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheriesmanagement, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources managementrelated field of study from an accredited college or university and four yearsof experience in performing professional biological work in the field ofnatural resources management for the required experience.
2.Candidates may substitute graduate education beyond a Bachelor's degree from anaccredited college or university in a natural resources related field of studyas described above at the rate of 15 graduate credit hours for one yearofexperience for up to two years of the required experience.
3.Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military serviceexperience asa commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biologicalsciences classifications or naturalresources management and biologicalsciences specialty codes in thewildlife biology field of work on ayear-for-year basis for therequired experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience leading or coordinating a large collaborative biological assessment
- Familiarity with current stream restoration practices and applicable state and federal policies
- Experience in ecological sampling of aquatic ecosystems including the use of electrofishing techniques, benthic macroinvertebrate sampling techniques, physical habitat assessments, and/or geomorphology assessments.
- Understanding of experimental design and statistical analysis of ecological datasets using the R programming language
- Taxonomy and ecology of stream fishes, benthic macroinvertebrates, herpetofauna, crayfishes, and freshwater mussels.
- Familiarity with the use of Access, Excel, and data analysis software.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
